Dragon Asphalt Ltd Protects Aggregate Quality and Lowers Costs with Zappshelter

The Company:

Dragon Asphalt Ltd is a leading supplier of asphalt products based in Oldbury. Committed to delivering high-quality materials and efficient operations, they are a key player in the local construction and surfacing industry.

For the development of their new asphalt plant in Oldbury, they needed a reliable and robust solution to cover their material bays, which were built on steel and concrete structures. Zappshelter was chosen to deliver a custom project to meet this requirement, successfully outperforming traditional structural alternatives.

The Challenge:

When aggregate is left exposed to the elements, it becomes wet, which ultimately results in poorer quality materials. Drying wet aggregates doesn’t just drive up production costs and burn more fuel; it can slow down the whole production process and compromise the final product.

For their new asphalt plant in Oldbury, Dragon Asphalt needed to solve this problem from day one, ensuring their operation would be as efficient as possible. However, they quickly discovered that relying on their traditional steel shed provider for full coverage of the bays was proving too expensive, leading them to seek a more cost-effective alternative.

The Solution:

The solution was a bespoke Zappshelter, named ‘Whitney’, customised to the site’s layout and structural requirements. The shelter was mounted directly onto in-situ RSJ beams, which had been efficiently installed by the customer, creating an ideal, fully covered storage area. The installation included:

  • One 17m wide x 12.2m long Zappshelter
  • Enclosed at the rear with a partial end wall
  • Central valley guttering to assist with rain run-off
  • Mounted to customer-installed in-situ RSJ beams

To handle the unpredictable British weather, the partial end wall was fitted to the rear of the shelter, while the central valley guttering provided an ideal solution for water management, ensuring rain run-off is safely directed away from the materials.

The Result:

With aggregate consistently kept dry, Dragon Asphalt has eliminated the risk of wet, poorer-quality materials entering their production line.

By choosing Zappshelter, they achieved full cover for their bays in a much more cost-effective manner than standard steel sheds could offer.

A successful project is about more than just the structure; it’s about enabling operational excellence. By keeping their materials protected at their new Oldbury base, Dragon Asphalt has ensured their facility is consistently ready to produce the highest standard of asphalt from day one.

What Dragon Asphalt Says:

“Thank you to all the team at Zappshelter. Excellent communication throughout, quality of the shelter is excellent and install was completed efficiently, safely and without causing any interruption to the site build.
