BMI Redland Eliminates Weather Damage to Premium Roofing Products with Zappshelter

The Company:

BMI Redland is one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of pitched roofing products and services. With over 100 years of industry expertise, they produce a vast range of high-quality concrete, clay, and resin-slate tiles.

As part of the BMI Group, the company is committed to excellence, rigorous testing  and delivering comprehensive roofing solutions across all its operations.

At their busy facility in Leighton Buzzard, BMI Redland needed a reliable weatherproof storage solution to keep their goods dry. Zappshelter was chosen to deliver a custom weatherproof structure to meet this exact requirement.

The Challenge:

Exposure to the elements was affecting BMI Redland’s inventory. When rainwater penetrates porous concrete and clay tiles, freezing temperatures can cause irreversible cracking and spalling, while trapped moisture triggers unsightly efflorescence that ruins the product’s premium finish. Additionally, constant exposure to rain degrades wooden pallets and packaging, leading to potential collapsed loads during forklift handling, and promotes moss and mold growth.

This doesn’t just drive up waste and replacement costs; it can slow down the dispatch process and impact customer satisfaction. For their Leighton Buzzard site, BMI Redland needed to solve this problem quickly, ensuring their premium roofing products remained in perfect condition before shipping.

The Solution:

The solution was a bespoke, fully enclosed Zappshelter, named ‘Lally’, customised specifically to the site’s layout and operational requirements. The structure was structurally engineered to create a secure and easily accessible covered storage area.

The installation included:

  • One 14m wide x 12.2m (40ft) long Zappshelter mounted on containers
  • A 4m x 4m steel roller door
  • The Zappshelter was fully enclosed for weather protection and security

To handle the unpredictable British weather and ensure maximum protection, the heavy-duty steel roller door was integrated to fully enclose the structure, offering an ideal and highly secure solution for year-round material management.

The Result:

BMI Redland is already seeing the benefits of their fully enclosed storage setup. By keeping goods completely protected from the elements, they have eliminated weather-related damage and improved their loading operations.

A successful project, however, is about more than just the structure – it’s about the partnership. This facility exemplifies what we strive for on every build: bespoke solutions, exceptional service, and a professional, safety-first approach from start to finish.
