Improving Poultry Biosecurity: Joice and Hill’s New Zappshelter Truck Wash Bay

The Company:

Joice and Hill Poultry Ltd is a leading UK distributor of laying hens and chicks. Specialising in high-performance breeds for the free-range and colony egg sectors, they are a key part of Hendrix Genetics – a global leader in animal breeding.

The company is committed to innovation, safety and maintaining the highest biosecurity standards across its operations. 

At their Peterborough site, Joice and Hill needed a reliable and robust shelter solution to create a dedicated truck wash bay. Zappshelter was chosen to deliver a custom project to meet this requirement.

The Challenge:

In the poultry industry, having a high standard of hygiene is critical to preventing disease and ensuring flock health. When delivery trucks and site vehicles are washed outdoors, staff are left exposed to the unpredictable British weather. This doesn’t just lower morale; it can slow down the cleaning process and make controlling overspray difficult. 

Joice and Hill needed to ensure their vehicle hygiene and maintenance would be as efficient, comfortable and rigorously controlled as possible.

The Solution:

The solution was ‘Charissa’, a bespoke Zappshelter, customised to the site’s layout and requirements. The structure was mounted onto ISO shipping containers, creating an elevated wash bay while providing secure container storage underneath.

The installation included:

• One 8m x 12.2m (40ft) Zappshelter
• Mounted onto 2x ISO shipping containers
• Rear elevation enclosed with a Full End Wall
• Open front elevation

To handle the British weather and contain wash-down overspray, a custom full end wall was fitted to the rear of the shelter, while the open front allowed for easy access for large trucks.

The Result:

With a dedicated, weatherproof truck wash bay in place, Joice and Hill is already seeing the benefits of a more efficient and protected truck washing process.
