Flexible Quarry Storage: How Singleton Birch Protects Lime By-Products with Zappshelter

The Company:

Singleton Birch is one of the UK’s leading independent lime suppliers. Operating from the Melton Ross Quarries in Barnetby, North Lincolnshire, they have built a formidable reputation for delivering high-quality lime, chalk and aggregate products across multiple industries. The company is committed to innovation, sustainability and efficient resource management across all its operations.

For the ongoing management of their active quarry site, Singleton Birch needed a reliable and adaptable solution to keep bulk materials dry. Zappshelter was chosen to deliver a flexible storage setup to meet this exact requirement.

The Challenge:

When lime by-products are exposed to the elements, they can react with rain and humidity, causing the material to clump, degrade in quality, or turn into a difficult-to-handle sludge. This doesn’t just create an untidy  site; it also makes moving, processing and repurposing the material more difficult and costly.

Quarries are dynamic environments where operational layouts frequently change. Singleton Birch needed a solution that would solve this moisture problem immediately, but without tying them down to a permanent, traditional building that couldn’t easily be moved as their site logistics changed.

The Solution:

The solution was a robust, bespoke Zappshelter, named “Kimora”, customised to the quarry’s layout and requirements. The shelter was mounted onto ISO shipping containers, providing the dual benefit of a solid foundation and additional secure, storage space underneath.

The installation included:

  • One 12m x 12m Zappshelter
  • A Partial End Wall for enhanced protection against driving rain and wind
  • Mounted securely on ISO shipping containers

The Result:

Originally installed in 2022 to protect their lime by-products, the Zappshelter provided excellent, consistent weather protection from day one.

As site operations evolved, the Singleton Birch team needed the storage area moved. Thanks to Zappshelter’s flexible design, the entire structure was  easily relocated to a new position on-site. Try moving a traditional steel-framed building – it’s not so easy!

The feedback from the team highlights exactly what we strive for: flexible, reliable protection that works around our clients’ changing needs. They remarked that they are very happy with their Zappshelter and would consider a further one in the future as business needs arise. Success all-round!
