Operating within the waste and recycling sector, Kent County Council’s New Romney Reuse Facility plays a vital role in promoting the circular economy. Facilitated by B Parsons & Son, the site offers the public a dedicated space to browse and purchase recycled products, keeping valuable items out of landfill and generating revenue for local initiatives.
As the seasons changed and the weather threatened to turn, the New Romney facility urgently needed a covered area to safely store and display recycled products for public browsing. Without adequate weather protection, these goods were at risk of water damage, which would directly lead to a loss of reuse profits.
Furthermore, because this is a public-facing council site, safety and durability were paramount. Standard fabric hanging curtains were quickly ruled out due to concerns about wind and flapping sheets, and the entire project had to carefully navigate strict council planning approvals and budget parameters.
Acting on behalf of the council, B Parsons & Son undertook market research to find a structure that could meet stringent public safety requirements. While cheaper alternatives were available, they recognised that a public-facing council environment demanded high-quality engineering. They chose Zappshelter as a premium investment to ensure safety, structural integrity and durability.
To keep the overall project cost-effective and within budget, the client supplied three standard-height, side opening 20ft shipping containers themselves, creating a robust base for the new Zappshelter.
We supplied and installed a bespoke 6m wide x 6.1m long Zappshelter, named carefully configured for safe public access. Mounted securely to the three shipping containers, the structure is fully enclosed, featuring a partial end wall at the rear and a full end wall at the front.
To specifically address the council’s wind and safety concerns, a 3m wide x 3m high steel roller door and frame were installed in place of a traditional fabric curtain. A complete PVC rainwater gutter system was also integrated to safely channel runoff away from the public browsing area.
The New Romney Reuse Facility now boasts a safe, dry and durable environment for the local community to browse recycled goods. By securing this covered space before the harshest weather hit, B Parsons & Son and Kent County Council successfully safeguarded the facility’s inventory.
The meticulous engineering of the Zappshelter ensures that the site remains safe and operational year-round, protecting vital reuse profits and supporting the region’s recycling goals.
