Lagan Aviation Lowers Aggregate Drying Costs and Improves Site Flexibility with Zappshelter

The Company:

Lagan Aviation & Infrastructure Ltd is a leading specialist in the delivery of airside and landside aviation projects for the military and civil aviation sectors. Operating across major and regional airports throughout the UK, Ireland, and internationally, they are also a key delivery partner to the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO). 

To ensure program and budget certainty, Lagan uses in-house resources, producing and testing their own concrete and asphalt materials on-site using state-of-the-art batching plants and UKAS-accredited laboratories.

The Challenge:

In the infrastructure sector, when it comes to aggregates, excess moisture is costly!

Drying out wet sand is an energy-intensive process, requiring up to 14 litres of Kerosene per ton to dry. With fuel prices averaging between 70-80 pence per litre, the cost of processing damp materials was escalating rapidly for Lagan Aviation.

Also, given the fast-paced, site-to-site nature of aviation infrastructure contracts, a permanent building was unsuitable. Lagan Aviation needed  a robust storage solution that gave them the flexibility to dismantle, transport and relocate their structures easily as new projects arose.

The Solution:

To protect their materials and reduce fuel consumption, Lagan Aviation invested in a heavy-duty, adaptable storage solution from Zappshelter.

The specification installed included:

• 2x Zappshelters: Substantial industrial shelters measuring 12m wide by 36.8m long.
• Galvanised valley gutter & outlet: Custom-engineered to ensure optimal water management and drainage between the twin structures.

This setup provided a massive, weather-proof footprint to protect their aggregate from the elements, ensuring the sand remained dry before ever reaching the production phase.

The Result:

By keeping their aggregate under cover, Lagan Aviation considerably reduced fuel consumption for drying. Storing dry sand instead of wet sand yields a massive saving of 5 to 10 litres of Kerosene per ton. At current fuel prices, this translates directly to a saving of £3.50 to £8.00 per ton of processed material.

Beyond the immediate financial and environmental payback of lower fuel consumption, the Zappshelter investment has already proven its worth in operational flexibility.

The Zappshelters were first installed at Edinburgh Airport, Scotland, in view of their major runway resurfacing project. With extremely short project timescales, Lagan needed to ensure all materials and equipment, needed throughout the entire project, was on site beforehand. This meant there were no delays which would delay the airport reopening.

Having been successfully used last year, these Zappshelters are currently being dismantled and relocated to a new project at RAF Waddington. This flexibility reveals the true value of a Zappshelter – providing permanent-quality protection with all the convenience of a temporary solution.
