Storage on Site: Future-Proofed Container Modification with Zappshelter Workshop

The Company:

Storage on Site Ltd is a leading supplier of shipping containers and cabins based in Southampton. A family-run business with a strong reputation, they specialise in container hire, sales and bespoke modifications – handling everything from standard storage units to complex cabin conversions.

With a commitment to supporting local industry, purchasing decisions are made carefully. As Managing Director Neil Vickery explains: “We chose Zappshelter because they’re a local-based company to us and we like to purchase British made items when we can.”

When they needed a dedicated, weather-proof area to protect their workforce and streamline their container modification work, they chose Zappshelter. Our goal was to provide a strong, flexible structure that would serve them now and well into the future.

The Challenge:

For a business that modifies and works on large shipping containers, space and weather protection are critical. Storage on Site faced a common issue, according to Neil, “we didn’t have a dedicated area for container modification.”

Without a shelter, their operations were at the mercy of the elements. They needed a solution that would allow their workforce to operate efficiently 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, regardless of the British weather.

They also needed a facility large enough to house 40ft containers permanently while still leaving a safe, spacious working zone around them. They wanted a solution that was adaptable – something that would ensure the site was ready for whatever the future held.

The Solution:

Our solution was a 14m wide x 12.2m long Zappshelter, mounted onto double-stacked shipping containers. This extra height provides ample clearance for machinery and large modifications.

To ensure maximum protection from driving wind and rain, the structure features a full rear end-wall, sealing the gap down to the containers. This created a fully enclosed, dry workshop environment tailored exactly to their needs.

The installation process was seamless. Neil noted that “Zappshelter has made it extremely easy for us,” handling everything from the organisation of plant and materials to the delivery schedule.

The Result:

The new Zappshelter has transformed how Storage on Site operates. By creating a massive undercover processing area, they have achieved several key operational wins:

  • Year-round productivity: The workforce can now operate under cover on a “24/7 basis, 365 days a year.” Rain or shine, work on modifications continues without interruption.
  • Space to work: The spacious interior allows them to house a 40ft container on a permanent basis while maintaining a safe, comfortable working area around it.
  • Future-proofing: Neil sums up the impact perfectly: “The one phrase I’d use for Zappshelter is future-proofed.” The system allows them the flexibility to extend their bays in the future if and when demand increases.

The feedback from Neil and the team has been fantastic. They have secured a high-quality, British-made solution that not only solves their immediate problems but sets them up for long-term success. As Neil told us: “We couldn’t wish for more – they’ve been fantastic.”
