Veolia Protects Woodchip Value and Ensures EA Compliance with Zappshelter

The Company:

Veolia is a global leader in resource management and a longstanding, highly valued client. Over the past five years, we have proudly partnered with them on dozens of successful projects across the UK. At their Rainham Landfill Site in Essex, Veolia processes significant volumes of woodchip, playing a vital role in sustainable waste treatment and recycling.

The Challenge:

Veolia has two existing 14m x 12.2m block-mounted Zappshelters at the Rainham site. These existing structures are essential for shredding and processing woodchip undercover, ensuring strict compliance with Environment Agency (EA) regulations by safely containing the dust generated during operations.

However, they faced a new challenge post-processing: storage. When processed woodchip is stored outside and exposed to the elements, it loses its value and causes efficiency problems for their biomass customers. To maximise the return on their processed materials, Veolia needed a dedicated, effective dry storage solution to protect the woodchip from the unpredictable British weather before it is moved off-site.

The Solution:

To solve this, Veolia opted for a third Zappshelter to be installed alongside their existing setup at the Rainham site. We supplied and installed a bespoke structure designed to perfectly complement their current workflow and environmental needs.

The installation included:

  • One 14m x 12.2m Zappshelter
  • Concrete block mounting to create a robust, high-capacity storage bay
  • A partial rear end-wall for protection against driving rain
  • Valley gutters integrated to manage rainwater effectively between the structures

The Result:

By adding this third Zappshelter, Veolia has successfully streamlined their woodchip processing and storage at Rainham. The final product is now kept consistently dry, eliminating the loss of commercial value caused by wet woodchip.

The site also continues to operate safely within strict EA guidelines. This project is yet another testament to our successful, ongoing five-year relationship with Veolia, proving that the right undercover storage doesn’t just protect materials – it actively protects the bottom line.
