Workshop Solutions: How Esk Glazing Expanded their Recycling Facility with Zappshelter

The Company:

Esk Glazing Limited is a leading provider of windows, doors and interiors in North East Scotland. Established in 1974 and still family-owned and operated today, they offer a diverse range of products through their specialist subdivisions: Esk Interiors, Dundee Glass Balustrading and the Design Studio.

With a reputation built on quality and innovation, they are constantly looking for ways to improve their manufacturing processes and environmental impact.

When Esk Glazing launched a new division dedicated to window recycling at their manufacturing facility in Arbroath, Dundee, they needed a robust, flexible covered solution to house the operation. They chose Zappshelter to help them achieve their ambitious sustainability goals.

The Challenge:

For a company committed to innovation, material wastage is a major inefficiency. Esk Glazing’s manufacturing processes are designed to virtually eliminate waste, but managing the sheer volume of recyclable material requires a dedicated, protected space.

Esk Glazing was starting a new division specifically for window recycling. To make this viable, they needed a processing area that would allow them to sort and handle materials efficiently, regardless of the harsh Scottish weather.

Without a covered processing area, the operation would be exposed to the elements, potentially slowing down the recycling workflow and hindering their ability to process the volumes required to meet their environmental targets. They needed a solution that was quick to install, durable to withstand the harsh weather and flexible to relocate.

The Solution:

Our solution was a Zappshelter measuring 6m wide by 12.2m long. This spacious structure provides the ideal protected environment for their new window recycling processing area. Esk Glazing opted to fully brand their Zappshelter. This ensures a completely custom, professional look and the opportunity to maximise their brand exposure.

To ensure maximum protection while maintaining easy access for machinery and personnel, the structure includes a partial end-wall. This offers extra shielding from wind and driving rain, ensuring that the recycling team can operate comfortably and efficiently year-round.

The Zappshelter was the perfect fit for their Arbroath facility, offering a fast, cost-effective way to expand their operations, without the long lead times and high costs of a traditional building. The Result:

The new facility is already playing a pivotal role in Esk Glazing’s sustainability strategy. By creating a dedicated, weather-proof zone for recycling, they are achieving impressive environmental milestones:

• Waste Reduction: The new recycling facility has the capacity to reduce the amount of waste material going to landfill by approximately 150 tonnes per week.
• Circular Economy: The processing area allows Esk Glazing to ensure that all their frames feature up to 80% recycled material, closing the loop on their manufacturing process.
• Operational Efficiency: The Zappshelter ensures that the recycling division can operate continuously, protected from the elements, ensuring that material processing never stops due to bad weather.
